Customer project: PV canopy with square aluminum tubes

Photovoltaics can be used not only for power generation but also integrated into exciting DIY projects. This customer project from Bernhard in Norderstedt shows a unique solution: PV modules were mounted on a house wall as a canopy-like structure and supplemented with square aluminum tubes.

The result is a custom construction that positions the solar modules above the window and can simultaneously serve as a shading element. The solar components and the storage system were selected by the customer; Alu-Verkauf supplied the square aluminum tubes for the construction.

PV modules as a canopy and sun protection

In this project, PV modules were mounted above a window. This creates a canopy-like solution that visually matches the facade while shading the area underneath.

Such positioning can be particularly interesting in summer, when additional shade in front of the window is desired. At the same time, the actual function of the solar modules is maintained. However, the extent to which orientation, tilt, and shading affect performance always depends on the specific location, mounting position, and components used.

Important: This project serves as inspiration and does not replace technical planning. For PV modules on buildings, fastening, the substrate, wind load, cable routing, and electrical components should be professionally inspected.

Square aluminum tubes used

Square aluminum tubes measuring 30 x 30 x 3.0 mm were used for the construction. The length of each was 995 mm.

Square aluminum tubes can be used for many individual constructions because they have a clear, straight shape and can be easily combined with suitable connecting elements. However, which dimension is appropriate for an individual case always depends on the planned construction, the mounting points, and the loads involved.

Idea: adjustable tilt angle

Bernhard's idea of further developing the construction in the future with a hydraulic or electrically assisted lifting device is particularly exciting. This would allow the tilt angle of the modules to be adjusted flexibly.

The reasoning behind this: in summer, the modules could be positioned flatter to provide more shade. In winter, they could be set steeper to allow more light to enter from outside. A variable tilt can also be interesting for aligning the modules with the sun.

Note: A movable PV construction is technically more demanding than a fixed installation. Joints, drives, locking mechanisms, wind loads, cable movement, and electrical safety would need to be carefully planned and tested.

What this customer project shows

The project nicely demonstrates how versatile aluminum profiles and aluminum tubes can be used outdoors. A standard profile is turned into an individual solution that has been adapted to the structural situation.

At the same time, the example shows: careful planning pays off for projects with PV modules. In addition to the profiles themselves, wall mounting, module fastening, cables, the roof or facade situation, and the intended use all play an important role.
