The aluminum U-profile: versatile

The aluminum U-profiles are - like many other aluminum profiles - versatile and also used in industrial and craft sectors. Ultimately, the size and the distance between the edges play an important role here. The possible uses are so diverse that it is impossible to list all the possibilities. Instead, some examples will be outlined below:

1. To create a lightweight wall

Maybe you want to divide up a larger room again. For example, you can add a lightweight wall to a large living room and create a small office for your home office . The aluminum U-profile is used as the basis . These guide rails can be fixed to the floor, wall and ceiling with screws.

The advantage of the aluminum U-profile is that the U-shaped recess can be used to provide the frame with an insulating layer. The well-known insulation panels find sufficient support in the aluminum U-profile. You can easily screw the aluminum rails and profiles together. This means you achieve a stable basic structure for the desired lightweight wall. After you have built your aluminum U-profile scaffolding , the sides can then be fitted with plasterboard. These just need to be primed and wallpapered.

2. For use as a running rail or edging

Are you planning a sliding door for a greenhouse? A room divider that can be pushed to the side if necessary? Then you should ideally use a U-profile made of aluminum.

If you want to use an aluminum U-profile as a running rail, you have to pay attention to the dimensions when choosing the right U-rail. The mistake often made is that the wall thickness is only taken into account once. So if you have a 15 mm thick door that you want to slide back and forth in the U-profile, you need a U-profile with an internal dimension of approx. 16 mm. This would be guaranteed with a U-profile 20x20x20x2 mm. The back of the profile is 20 mm wide, the thickness of the material is 2 mm. So we have an inside dimension of 16 mm. This ensures that there is approx. 0.5 mm of air on each side, thus preventing the door from jamming.

A U-profile 20x20x20x1.5 mm would also be possible - then we would have a so-called clear width of 17 mm and therefore 1 mm of air on each side of the sliding element . This would be preferable, for example, with wood, which can expand under certain environmental influences. Another option would be not to let the sliding door run directly in the U-profile, but to surround the door itself (top and bottom) in a U-profile and then let the U-profile run in a U-profile. This has the advantage that nothing can expand into this point and nothing gets jammed.

The use of a profile made of stainless steel would also be possible, but V2A U-profiles have the disadvantage that, on the one hand, they are significantly more expensive and, on the other hand, the selection of different dimensions is significantly smaller. The same applies to U-profiles made of steel (whether natural or galvanized). Aluminum U-profiles are particularly popular with building contractors and are therefore often used for house and apartment construction . In these cases it is also about installation in bathrooms and kitchens, where the U-profiles made of aluminum can be particularly effective, but silver anodized material is often used here for optical reasons.

3. For use as a frame

It doesn't always have to be large U-profiles. If you use a fairly narrow aluminum U-profile , you can use it as a frame for a picture, for example. High-quality art prints on glass or canvas are increasingly being provided with a surrounding frame . An aluminum U-profile can be aligned exactly to the image thickness and in this way offers optimal edge protection that even looks really elegant.

Isosceles aluminum U-profiles

We are often asked about unequal-sided aluminum U-profiles. In these profiles, the left and right legs have different heights. Unfortunately, these profiles are very difficult to obtain, which is why many dealers - including us - only sell isosceles U-profiles.

However, there are two different ways to deal with this:

1. You take two angles and put them together to get the desired size.
2. You take a square tube and cut it to the desired size using a cutting disc or a Dremel, for example.

In both cases , however , the effort is high, which is why this approach is only recommended as a single solution for small quantities.

Before using aluminum U-profiles, a few important things should be taken into account:

The alloy of aluminum U-profiles

As standard, you will receive your aluminum U-profile from us in the AIMgSi0.5 alloy (EN AW 6060). However, we are often asked about modern and attractive anodized alloys.

Anodized aluminum profiles are usually used in the visible area of ​​a construction. If you are interested in picture frames made of aluminum U-profile, a silver anodized model can be a real eye-catcher . You can choose from a large selection of anodized versions. If you wish, we can also anodize your aluminum U-profile again later. There are only small additional costs for this.

The edges of the aluminum U-profiles

Aluminum U-profiles are usually quite sharp-edged - that doesn't mean that you would hurt yourself, but is just intended to show that the edges are really edges and have almost no radii. This is important to know if you want to use it to surround panels or glass. It would then be a hindrance if the panels could not be fitted to the bottom of the U-profile due to the curve. However, due to the sharp edges , it is possible for a wooden panel to be inserted all the way to the inside of the “back”.

Cleaning the aluminum U-profiles

The aluminum U-profile should be cleaned from time to time so that it does not lose its shine. If the profile is easily accessible and visible to others, cleaning is particularly worthwhile.

Because aluminum is very easy to care for, you can easily clean it with a cloth and a conventional cleaning agent and water . Since aluminum doesn't rust, you shouldn't worry about using water. Only after cleaning should it be wiped dry again to prevent possible oxidation.
