Customer project: Aluminum substructure for bird feeder

Even small garden and balcony projects can be realized individually with aluminium profiles. This customer project by Michael from Laubach shows a great idea: A bird feeder was attached to a self-built aluminium platform and mounted to the existing railing using a square aluminium tube.

Bird feeder on an aluminium platform

Instead of placing the bird feeder on the ground or on a separate stand, Michael constructed his own platform. A 4 mm thick aluminium plate measuring 300 x 370 mm serves as a support surface for the feeder.

Beneath the plate is a square aluminium tube 60 x 30 x 2.0 mm. The tube connects the platform to the mounting on the existing railing.

Important: This customer project serves as inspiration. The appropriate fastening depends on the existing railing, the attachment points, the loads incurred, and local conditions, and should be checked accordingly.

How was the bird feeder attached to the railing?

In his construction, Michael uses existing mounting options on his railing from Treba Frewa. The posts offer the possibility of screwing an M8 threaded rod into the center. The square aluminium tube was mounted at this attachment point.

Countersunk screws M10 x 45 mm and spacer sleeves 20 x 25 mm were also used for the setup. Michael still had these components left over from a previous project.

He had also previously adjusted the railing itself: Eight railing posts were modified with additional sleeves or pipe sections to create a greater distance.

Note: Not every railing offers the same threads, mounts, or attachment options. Anyone planning a similar construction should therefore first check which attachment points are available and suitable for the planned application.

Which aluminium parts were used?

For the actual platform of the bird feeder, Michael ordered a square aluminium tube and an aluminium plate from us to match his required dimensions.

The plate creates a flat support surface for the feeder, while the square tube establishes the connection to the existing railing construction.

Thanks to the custom cutting to the required dimensions, both aluminium parts could be used directly for the planned assembly.

The example clearly shows how an aluminium plate and square tube can be combined when an individual platform needs to be adapted to an existing structure.

Aluminium for individual garden and balcony projects

This project shows how square aluminium tubes and plates can also be used for smaller, individual constructions. The components can be selected to match the available space and the required dimensions and combined with each other.

For outdoor constructions, wind, weather, and the loads that will occur later should be taken into account in addition to the actual fastening.
