As a rule, a distinction is made between aluminum sheets and aluminum plates. Aluminum sheets are usually referred to as having a thickness of up to approx. 8 mm. Aluminum plates, on the other hand, are the thicker plates, which are also manufactured using various processes. There are rolled plates and cast plates. The main difference between these two processes is that the cast plates have significantly lower internal stress and can therefore play out their clear advantage over rolled plates in further processing, for example by CNC milling. Therefore, cast plates are predominantly used in toolmaking. There are two main differences between cast plates.

On the one hand, there are normal aluminum plates and, on the other hand, aluminum plates with a milled surface. For this purpose, the raw cast plates are precision-milled on both sides, which results in a very flat surface with only minimal deviations in terms of consistent continuous thickness tolerance and surface roughness. After milling, these aluminum plates are also provided with a protective film on both sides so that they are protected from scratches or similar during storage and handling. The protective film has such high adhesion that it adheres so well to the cast aluminum plates that, despite the film, they can be easily transported using our vacuum suction cups and placed on our panel saws for cutting without damage. This ensures at all times that the surface cannot be damaged by forklift tines.

Cutting aluminum plates - delivery times for cut-to-size aluminum sheets

In times of Amazon, Ebay and Co., the expected delivery times for end consumers are becoming shorter and shorter. Where delivery times of 2 weeks were normal for an aluminum plate cut a few years ago, this would no longer be accepted by end consumers today. Only for commercial customers who need larger quantities of cut-to-size aluminum plates are these delivery times still normal.

Since we specialize in selling small quantities of custom-cut parts via our online shop, a short delivery time can also be achieved for the significantly more complex production of plate cuts. Normally, we deliver a custom-cut aluminum plate within 1-3 days from our warehouse after ordering.

This is made possible by a sophisticated plate optimization system. For example, if we receive an order for 20mm thick milled cast aluminum plates, our software immediately includes all existing orders that contain these plates in the sawing plan to be created. This ensures that a large plate of 4-5 sqm is only "handled" once to produce all cuts. This has the advantage that work can be carried out very effectively and quickly, because handling such aluminum plates still accounts for the majority of the time. One has to imagine that for a 5 sqm 20mm aluminum plate, 300 kg have to be moved. This lies on a pallet in a high-bay warehouse and has to be removed by forklift and brought to the saw.

Then the plate is moved onto the panel saw with a crane and vacuum lifter and the CNC sawing plan is fed in. In between, finished cuts are now removed from the saw to freely saw the remaining aluminum plate down to the no longer needed remainder. Afterwards, the remaining plate is put back on the pallet with a vacuum lifter and transported back into our shelf by forklift. So one can imagine that this process is quite time-consuming. If a system is not used from the outset that allows one to perfectly reduce the manufacturing time to a minimum, there is no way to catch up elsewhere.

Which alloy should I choose?

Aluminum sheet is known for its diverse applications due to the different properties of the various alloys. Despite its low density, it offers high robustness, quality, and flexibility in application, which is rarely found in other materials. Since we have a wide range of alloys, you will surely find the right variant for every application. Regardless of whether you want to mill, polish or bend the material. Depending on the chosen alloy, all this is possible. Even plates that are planed on both sides with protective film in a drilling and milling quality can be delivered by us promptly from stock. Also, because aluminum does not rust, it is an excellent argument for buying such plates, which are often replaced by our customers in the private sector with existing wooden plates and thus guarantee longevity.

Aluminum plates are also excellent thermal conductors and are therefore also used (immediately after copper plates) as heat sinks. When choosing the right aluminum alloy, a look at our materials science will certainly help you. Here again, the most important alloys of our aluminum sheets and plates. AlMg3 - new standard AlMg3 we can generally recommend for bending, anodizing or welding. AlMg4,5Mn - new standard AlMg4,5Mn0,7 is excellently suited for welding and machining and is often used in mechanical engineering. AlCuMg1 - new standard AlCu4MgSi (A) is also excellently suited for machining and has an even higher tensile strength than AlMg4,5Mn. However, it is not suitable for welding

AlZnMgCu1,5 - new standard AlZn5,5MgCu can also be very well machined and is preferably used in aerospace and for particularly safety-relevant parts due to its very high strength. Do not be irritated by the new designations. 95% of all users still use the old DIN designations. This is certainly due in part to the fact that they are largely much shorter and in part to the fact that what has been used for years does not change overnight.

Since sheets and plates can be processed in all conceivable thicknesses and dimensions, the application possibilities for this material are almost inexhaustible. They are used in vehicle construction as well as in construction as cladding for facades or indoors as an eye-catcher. Since our aluminum plates are therefore very versatile, there are almost no limitations. Plates and sheets made of aluminum are also found especially in mechanical engineering or in toolmaking. Aluminum sheets also play an important role in aviation.

The low weight combined with very high load-bearing capacity in some alloys offers indispensable advantages over steel.
